Wind tunnels for thermal characterisation

Advanced Thermal Solutions has introduced a pair of research quality, open loop wind tunnels for acquiring the thermal characteristics of components, circuit boards, and cooling devices such as heatsinks, heat exchangers and cold plates. The CWT-107 wind tunnel produces uniform air flow up to 6 m/s through its test section.
The 60,96 cm x 60,96 cm x 17,78 cm test area accommodates multiple PCBs, and allows comparison testing of heatsinks and other devices in a single, side-by-side analysis. The CWT-108 produces air flow up to 5 m/s and has a test section that is 2,5 cm deeper to fit additional boards and components.
These wind tunnels provide precise, homogenous air flow resulting from individually controlled 24 V fans, an open loop polynomial design, and a high precision internal flow management system, which features honeycombs and screens to break up turbulence. The tunnels have convenient access doors for mounting test boards. Optional rail guides allow for easy installation of different test specimens.
Each tunnel features 18 ports on its front and sides. The ports allow the use of various probes and sensors, including anemometers, power transducers, and thermocouples to measure pressure, velocity, temperature and other characteristics. The clear Plexiglas walls of the test area allow direct observation of air flow with the use of smoke or buoyant bubbles. The CWT-107 is 198 cm long x 76 cm wide x 102 cm high, while the CWT-108 is slightly wider at 85 cm. Both wind tunnels can be used in either the vertical or horizontal position.
Both tunnels are available with the ATS WTC-100 Wind Tunnel Controller, which further automates the thermal characterisation process. ATS also carries a full line of temperature, flow and pressure sensors and scanners that are designed for use with the CWT-107 and CWT-108.
