Tiny LEDs boast long lifetimes

3 October 2007 Opto-Electronics

LUXEON Rebel power LEDs from Philips Lumileds have a tiny footprint of just 3 mm x 4,5 mm, and are able to sustain drive currents up to 1000 mA. Benefits of this LED family include reduced thermal design overheads, achieved through a high maximum permitted junction temperature of 150°C and a thermal resistance of

10°C/W from the junction to the thermal pad. The range includes the colour options of green, cyan, blue, royal blue, red, red/orange and amber. In addition, cool-white, neutral white and warm-white shades are available with nominal colour temperatures of 6500 K, 4100 K and 3000 K respectively. These LEDs also display very low variation of colour temperature with viewing angle, leading to great consistency and fidelity of colour replication. The white, green, cyan, blue and royal blue LEDs are able to operate at up to 1000 mA drive current and

150°C maximum junction temperature, while the red, red/orange and amber colours operate up to 700 mA and 135°C. Projected lumen maintenance for the 1000 mA capable devices is 70% after 50 000 hours driven continuously at 700 mA. The red, red/orange and amber LEDs are projected at 70% lumen maintenance after 50 000 hours at 350 mA. The LUXEON Rebel family is also qualified for automotive applications.
