Two-channel firewire controller in PC/104-Plus format

17 October 2007 Computer/Embedded Technology

With the Microspace PC/104-Plus board MSMW104+, Digital-Logic is offering a powerful IEEE-1394 (firewire) controller for two channels.

The 32-bit PCI-bus board is based on the IEEE-1394 controller chip TSB43AB22 by Texas Instruments and provides a data rate of up to 400 Mbps across a maximum distance of 4,5 metres.

The MSMW104+ is equipped with two firewire connectors and thus allows 63 network nodes to be connected, and it supports plug-and-play technology. Auto recognition and device configuration - for which no adjustments to the board are required - ensure robust operation and high reliability. It runs under the most common operating systems like Windows and Linux and is a suitable solution to connect high speed devices like digital camcorders, audio or video recorders, CD/DVD drives, hard disks, printers, scanners and other external storage devices to an embedded system.

The module features dimensions of 90 x 96 x 15 mm (L x W x H) and a high mean time between failure of more than 100 000 hours. The board requires a 5 V power supply and operates within a temperature range of -25°C to 70°C. The typical current consumption is 150 mA.

With a BIOS extension, Digital-Logic's latest CPU products can also boot from a firewire hard disk or CD. Furthermore, the segment length can be extended by using repeaters while the firewire network can be widened to a maximum of 1000 segments by employing bridges. All segments consist of peripheral devices and can also hold a CPU. Another advantage is the 12 V supply voltage of the bus, allowing many firewire devices to operate without a separate power supply and therefore only requiring one cable.
