Single-chip transceiver solution for USB dongles

17 October 2007 Telecoms, Datacoms, Wireless, IoT

Nordic Semiconductor's new nRF24LU1 is a 2,4 GHz transceiver enabling the implementation of ultra-compact, high performance USB dongles for wireless peripherals by providing a true single chip solution in a tiny 5 x 5 mm QFN package with full on-chip security. It is also designed to integrate seamlessly (via Nordic's Enhanced ShockBurst hardware link layer) with ultra-low power 2,4 GHz peripherals - based on Nordic's nRF24L01 transceiver - that need to be able to run on small batteries for long periods of time.

A full suite of development tools designed to allow accelerated, low cost and low risk adoption of the nRF24LU1 have simultaneously launched to support the chip. The suite includes a production-ready USB dongle Reference Design, full Software Development Kit and a complete Hardware Development Kit.

The nRF24LU1 requires no external voltage regulator when employed within a product as it can be powered directly from the USB bus using an internal voltage regulator. It also generates all necessary clocks from a single 16 MHz external crystal, eliminating the need for the second additional crystal typical for a two-chip approach. The nRF24LU1's internal 16 KB of flash can also be used to emulate non-volatile memory, removing the need for an external EEPROM.

In order to provide high performance of a USB dongle system, the nRF24LU1 delivers a full-speed USB 12 Mbps PC to USB transfer rate, a powerful and highly optimised embedded 8051 MCU, plus a 2 Mbps air data rate.

Two key security aspects concern developers of modern wireless peripherals: the application security of communications between the peripheral and the dongle itself (imagine, for example, a wireless keyboard used in a banking environment); and second, the security of the IP contained within the firmware of the end product itself. The nRF24LU1 address security issues with an on-chip hardware AES encryption co-processor providing industry standard data encryption and decryption at the application level, and also employs 16 KB of on-chip flash memory that features fully configurable write- and read-back protection to offer complete protection from any reverse engineering or tear-down analysis.
