Local company develops wireless fingerprint identification system

Ideco, sole distributor of Sagem biometric solutions in southern Africa, has developed a unique wireless identity management system based on fingerprint identification and verification, called IBIS. IBIS (Ideco biometric start) is a small fingerprint scanner which scans the finger of an employee, and identifies and verifies the fingerprint, both locally from records in memory on the device itself, as well as by communicating via GPRS to a back-end server, if required.

"We have had many customer requests for a fingerprint recognition system that could be used in remote and mobile locations. There were no products available on the market to meet this requirement, and so we decided to explore possible options and develop the required device in-house," says Klaas Korterink, the developer of IBIS. "Our investigations led us to the GPRS network as a communications solution, as data can be communicated from vehicles as well as remote locations, anywhere within cellphone reception."

According to Korterink, they researched the available wireless modules, and chose the Wavecom Q2686 wireless CPU, supplied by Trinity Telecomms. "The Wavecom module provides not only the communications functionality, but also an embedded processor on which we are able to run our application. Because it contained all the required functionality, memory and sufficient I/Os in one module, it eliminated the need to find an external processor for the unit. This reduced the cost of the development, and has resulted in a very small footprint for the IBIS," says Korterink.

The IBIS fingerprint scanner has sufficient memory capacity to store large amounts of data. This includes up to 500 fingerprint records of staff, as well as time-and-attendance transaction logs which can be communicated to the backend server after-hours to cut costs, or in realtime if required.

"The IBIS is ideal for asset tracking and fleet management companies, as well as for anyone requiring access control in remote locations, or where other means of communication are not possible. Because the solution was developed in-house, Ideco is able to customise the solution for the customer's exact requirements by simply adding the functionality required onto the Wavecom processor."
