High accuracy low-dropout regulator

28 November 2007 Power Electronics / Power Management

ON Semiconductor has introduced the NCP590 family of high-precision, dual-output CMOS low dropout regulators (LDO). Offered in an ultra-small, low profile package, these devices are suitable for battery powered consumer and microprocessor-controlled portable applications.

The NCP590 family is capable of delivering up to 300 mA per output. Voltages from 0,8 V to 5 V are available to accommodate various requirements. The NCP590 is stable with any type of capacitor and under no-load conditions. The set point output voltage of the NCP590 is accurate to within ±0,9% with an operating voltage input up to 5,5 V. The devices feature ultra low dropout characteristics (150 mV @ IOUT = 300 mA) and low ground current consumption in a compact 2 mm x 2 mm x 0,9 mm DFN-8 package.

Two independent ENABLE pins with sub-1 V thresholds allow increased flexibility, supporting the latest ASIC chipset and Power Management Unit platforms. Protected against short circuit, under-voltage lockout and thermal overload conditions, the NCP590 is a robust solution that helps maintain high system level performance. During transient events, the NCP590 maintains accurate regulation due to its internally compensated regulator. When disabled, the internal active discharge circuitry accelerates desired output response.
