Tips for buying a soldering station

20 February 2008 Manufacturing / Production Technology, Hardware & Services

A soldering station is a valuable accessory on any electronics workbench; it allows the exact temperature of the soldering iron tip to be adjusted, maintained and displayed.

Here are a few of the most important considerations when purchasing a solder station:

* Power requirement: often soldering applications are point-to-point soldering where a medium powered station is adequate. More demanding applications, such as ground planes or removing SMT devices, require a high performance soldering station.

* Versatility: several soldering stations are able to use a variety of hand pieces for different applications. Greater versatility equates to greater value when different operations are required at the same station. These types of stations also provide a smaller footprint at the work area instead of having several different single operation stations on hand. Another feature of many of these stations is the interchangeability of hand pieces.

* Tip selection: imperative to the overall usefulness of the soldering station is the availability of a wide selection of soldering tips. Tips small enough for the finest SMT rework to tips for removing large flatpacks should be available for the station you choose. Hand pieces that use both small and large tips are an excellent value.
