RF Micro Devices has introduced the ML5825 frequency transverter, designed to up-convert transmitted 2,4 GHz signals to 5,8 GHz and down-convert received 5,8 GHz signals to 2,4 GHz, functionality specifically optimised for streaming video applications. The addition of this frequency translation functionality to a pre-existing 2,4 GHz ISM band radio allows original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to quickly bring to market products for operation in the 5,8 GHz ISM band, including digital cordless phones and custom wireless data systems such as streaming audio and video appliances.
The ML5825 incorporates, on a single die, a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO), phase locked loop (PLL)-based synthesiser, low noise amplifier (LNA), receive and transmit bandpass filtering and mixers, and a transmit pre-driver. By offering a digitally controlled 18 dB gain step, the device allows radio designers to optimise third order input intercept point (IIP3) performance and noise figure based on specific application needs. Additionally, it offers a low power standby mode of 10 microamps to minimise average power consumption, leading to longer battery life in portable applications.
