3-phase motor drive application kit

17 September 2008 Design Automation

Addressing the increasing need for advanced motor drive solutions, Infineon is offering a new 3-phase motor drive application kit for permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM) and induction motors (ACIM). The key components of the kit are the 8-bit XC886 MCU capable of running field oriented control (FOC), the CIPOS intelligent power module (IPM), the onboard switched mode power supply (SMPS) based on COOLSET and a complete software package. The power stage is capable of driving both PMSM and ACIM motors with power rating of up to 750 W peak load.

The kit aims to shorten time-to-market for energy efficient motor control designs with excellent speed control, reduced noise and high system reliability. Target applications are white goods such as washing machines and various industrial motor control applications, eg, pumps, fans, etc.

The XC886 with its built-in 16-bit Vector ComputerFOC enables customers to develop cost-effective sensorless motor controls which are precise, highly responsive and energy efficient, even at highest torque. In addition, the MCU provides a powerful peripheral set including a PWM unit for advanced motor control (CapCom6E) and a fast 10-bit ADC with a conversion time of less than 1,5 μs.

The CIPOS module incorporates a three-phase inverter power stage with a SOI (silicon-on-insulator) gate driver, boot strap diodes and capacitors, and auxiliary circuitry in a compact, fully isolated package. Based on a combination of Infineon’s TrenchStop IGBTs with VCEsat of 1,6 V at 25°C and EmCon (emitter controlled) diode technology, the IPM significantly reduces the BOM compared to designs based on discrete components. The fully isolated package offers excellent thermal resistance and the CIPOS module shows a high ruggedness against negative transient voltage.

The kit integrates a PWM and protection control IC with a high voltage power MOSFET (COOLSET) which offers a very low standby power of less than 100 mW and excellent on-resistance.

The complete software package includes:

* DriveMonitor with graphical user interface (GUI) for realtime control/monitoring and USB-CAN bridge.

* Optimised sensorless FOC source code for PMSM.

* Source code for V/f control for ACIM for quick evaluation.

* Free tool chain including SDCC compiler and IDE.

* Fast Flash programming via JTAG.
