Class D amplifier driver

17 September 2008 Analogue, Mixed Signal, LSI

Supertex has introduced the MD7120, a high-voltage, high-speed, N-channel, full-bridge power MOSFET driver for use in Class-D audio amplifiers. The IC provides a broad range of output voltages from 12 to 200 V, has ±5 nanosecond dead time matching and rise or fall times of less than 30 nanoseconds with a typical 1 nF load. The MOSFETs are driven from normal logic level inputs by directly coupled internal level translators.

The MD7120 can be connected directly to a 200 V supply voltage and can drive over 100 W output with 90% efficiency. Its internal core consists of control logic, level translators, a bootstrap-powered high side gate driver and over-temperature, under-voltage and current protection circuits. The thresholds of the current protection for both the high and low sides are resistor-programmable.

The driver provides up to a 3,0 A peak driving current with matched output resistance and channel-to-channel propagation delay for low total harmonic distortion and noise.
