First Transmeta Crusoe micro-embedded board released

25 April 2001 Computer/Embedded Technology

ICP has released its new Transmeta Crusoe embedded board, the Wafer-6820. With the minute dimensions of only a 3,5" disk size, it offers the key features of low power consumption, higher-bandwidth bus and full x86 compatibility. This allows systems to run cooler, battery life to be longer and dimensions to be smaller than other conventional products, according to the company.

The Wafer-6820 is embedded with Transmeta Crusoe TM3200 400 MHz processor, CHIPS 69000 LCD/CRT VGA video controller, Realteck RTL 8139C 10/100 Mbps Ethernet. It is designed to support two USB ports, an RS232, RS232/422/485, parallel port and IRDA port and provide one Compactflash type II socket, one SO-DIMM socket and PC/104 expansion connector for add-on cards.

The Pocket PC, tiny POS system, mobile panel PC, mini kiosk and 3C commerce products manufactured using the company's Wafer-6820 will be among the lightest, coolest and smallest on the market.

The Transmeta CPU (TM3200/TM5400) emulate X86 instructions with software. Therefore, it uses 1 MB space to store the CMS (code morphing software) code. The 1 MB code is de-compressed into 16 MB instructions and this occupies the system memory when booting up. For this reason the DRAM type must be predefined (eg 8M x 16 bits). For example, a system with 128 MB memory has 112 MB ready for use after 16 MB RAM is occupied.

With absolute low power consumption no fan is necessary.
