Lean GPRS modules for industrial M2M

31 March 2010 Telecoms, Datacoms, Wireless, IoT

The Sierra Wireless AirPrime WS series of intelligent embedded modules provides entry-level cellular products which add wireless voice and data connectivity and provide WWAN connectivity in a highly compact form factor. The products incorporate all the necessary radio, processing, memory and software required for an M2M solution, in a 25 x 25 mm package.

The modules are designed with a castellation form factor so that they can be easily placed within a product. This design means that they are easy to solder on SMT lines, automatically or manually, as well as easy to visually inspect (no X-ray machines required). Correcting unsoldered points at end-of-line inspection (without reflow) is also trivial, as is field service, since removal can be done on-site without specific tools.

The WISMO218 module is a dual-band 900/1800 MHz GSM modem supporting multiple bearers (GSM, CSD, SMS, fax, GPRS) and multiple codecs (HR, FR, EFR, AMR). It consumes 369 mA in GSM/GPRS full-operation mode, 1,3 mA in idle mode and 36 μA in power-saving mode.

The WISMO228 module delivers the same features in an identical package, and adds quad-band 850/900/1800/1900 GSM connectivity as well as an embedded TCP/IP stack. It consumes up to 366 mA in GSM/GPRS full-operation mode, 1,22 mA in idle mode and 35 μA in power-saving mode.

Both modules feature 11 GPIOs and support both 1,8 V and 3 V SIM. Their CPU is an ARM 926 operating at a core frequency of 156 MHz, at an I/O voltage of 3,2 to 4,8 V. They are available in two operating temperature grades – Class A operating from -25°C to +75°C and Class B from-40°C to +85°C. Software drivers are available for Windows Mobile, CE, XP, Vista and 7.

The hardware is supported by the Sierra Wireless Discovery Tool, a simple and intuitive package for Windows environments that enables fast configuration of modules and easy access to basic modem features. The user interface enables engineers to access these features while simultaneously displaying the AT commands required during product development. The tool allows discovery and configuration of AirPrime WS series modules and performs a range of standard operations such as sending an SMS or setting up a GPRS connection to the Internet. The tool is provided free of charge.

Sierra Wireless also offers professional services, such as customer design review and product certification, IMEI implementation, as well as tailored delivery and product configuration. After-sales backup incorporates embedded module reconfiguration, out-of-warranty repair and extended warranty offerings.
