Maxim’s new DS1842A is a 76 V APD (avalanche photo diode), bias-output-stage and current-monitoring IC. By employing Maxim’s state-of-the art CMOS process technology, the device integrates a high-voltage current source; several current mirrors for monitoring APD current; and a FET switch configured to work in conjunction with an external DC-DC controller to implement a boost DC-DC converter. The result is a fast settling time for GPON modules and a competitive cost in a small package. The DS1842A is suitable for providing bias to, and current monitoring for APDs in PON-OLT and PON-ONT equipment. It is fully specified over the -40°C to +85°C temperature range, and is available in a small 3 x 3 mm 14-pin TDFN with exposed pad.
