New from Maxim is the MAX5971A, a single-port power-sourcing equipment (PSE) controller for IEEE 802.3af/at-compliant power-over-Ethernet (PoE+) applications. It integrates a 0,5 W power MOSFET and sense resistor, and delivers up to 40 W per port. The device operates from 32 V to 60 V and provides IEEE 802.3af/at-compliant PD discovery, classification and DC/AC load-disconnect detection. Class 5 and two-event classification are supported for detection and classification of high-power PDs. The MAX5971A is also capable of detecting legacy (non-compliant) PDs that use high capacitance as the discovery signature. The IC operates autonomously without the need for host processor intervention or software. Other features include input under-voltage lockout (UVLO) detection, input over-voltage detection, an LED-status indicator, over-temperature protection and output voltage slew-rate limiting during startup.
