Midspan PoE injector

2 February 2011 Power Electronics / Power Management

Phihong has expanded its passive power-over-Ethernet (PoE) injector lineup to include a low-cost 60 W midspan. Passive power injectors are for dedicated situations where there is no chance that a non-PoE compatible device may be connected. Four models are available in a 3-wire input version designated the POE61U and a 2-wire input version designated the POE61W.

All models in the series have an output of 56 V d.c. and meet requirements for ENERGY STAR EPS Version 2.0 and the Ecodesign (ErP) Directive 2009/125/EC level 2 Annex 1b. The devices are targeted at applications such as 802.11n wireless access radios, satellite receivers, high-performance security cameras, LCD displays, kiosks and WiMax access points.

The POE61U and POE61W are available with optional Gigabit Base-T data rates. The gigabit models will operate with full 4-pair powering whereas the non-gigabit models power only on the spare pairs. The Ultra PoE passive injector series features over-voltage, over-current and short circuit protection and bears UL and CE safety approval markings. Minimum average efficiency for the series is rated at 87% and is therefore compliant with Energy Star® EPS Version 2.0 and CEC level V.

The low-profile design includes a non-vented, spill-proof case that measures 163 x 65 x 36 mm and weighs 400 grams.
