Intaglio is a provider of innovative communications solutions using visual presentation arts as well as audio visual equipment and technologies.

Along with offering a comprehensive selection of audio visual presentation equipment, the company is a complete solution provider for small to large scale presentation environments, customising the solution to meet the needs of its customers.

Intaglio designs and integrates turnkey systems for effective presentation environments, including conference rooms, boardrooms, auditoriums, churches, video conferencing centres and distance learning classrooms. Its systems, while being precisely designed and engineered, are acknowledged as being straightforward to understand and operate, allowing customers to begin using technology faster, easier and more effectively. Among its many audio/visual products and services, Intaglio recently re-engineered its flagship enterprise presentation system, InForum.

InForum is a high-end commercial audio/video control system designed for corporate conference rooms or other large venues. The system offers high throughput video and audio signal processing, interfaces to a large variety of audio/visual equipment, and features very easy, single button touch control of traditionally hard to install/control VGA projectors, video conferencing and audio control equipment. From one central computer, technicians can run diagnostics, activate devices, monitor the status of presentation rooms, pre-program a power-on/off schedule for individual rooms, and more.

At the heart of the InForum system is an embedded single board computer (SBC) that acts as the control engine and user interface for the entire InForum system. The SBC manages all of the attached audio/visual equipment, presents the user interface and control station, and directs the video and audio streams within the system.

The InForum system was previously based on an ageing SBC. In addition to the need for more computing power, Intaglio also experienced quality issues with the SBC and a lack of support from their supplier. Critical in selecting a new SBC for the InForum system was finding a technologically advanced embedded computer with the right balance of performance and price, and from a supplier with a reputation for quality and responsive technical support.

As a result of their evaluation process, Intaglio selected the Pluto single board computer from Diamond Systems to be the new embedded computing engine for the InForum system. Pluto is a high-performance, highly integrated SBC with a 1,6 GHz Intel Atom N270 CPU and wealth of I/O including quad USB ports, quad serial ports, dual Ethernet ports and graphics interface. In addition, Pluto comes with an integrated conduction cooled thermal solution and is ready to mount to an enclosure.

To evaluate the Pluto SBC, Intaglio ordered a Pluto development kit that included the SBC, cables, OS drivers and documentation. Using this kit, they were able to get Pluto working with their system hardware and software right out of the box. In addition, the price of the Pluto SBC matched their target price well, and Diamond Systems was prepared to provide technical support during working hours in Intaglio’s time zone.
