Rugged PDA

22 June 2011 Computer/Embedded Technology

The P37B from Advantech is a highly rugged PDA with wireless communications and GPS tracking, designed specifically for operation in tough environments.

Harsh environments such as mines, construction sites and field work require computers that are capable of withstanding such challenging conditions as water, mud, dust and heat. Being able to use a computer in these situations enables field workers to record information, relay the information to a central office and receive feedback and instructions in the field. By including GPS satellite position information it becomes possible to know exactly where a worker or vehicle is at any time. This makes it possible to make better use of available resources by being able to instruct the closest vehicle or operator to react to a situation on site or in the field.

In emergency situations the vehicle or worker can be located by tracking their PDA. Certified to military MIL-STD-810F and MIL-STD-461E standards, the P37B is constructed with an IP67 rating. In fact, the unit has six side IP67 rating, which means that it is totally dust tight and can survive water immersion up to one metre. It has a 150 cm drop to concrete rating and can withstand temperatures up to 60°C.

The communications capabilities of the P37B include GPRS, BlueTooth and WiFi, allowing it to communicate locally to a wireless LAN or long distance to a cell network via GPRS/HSDPA. The unit also has RS232 and USB for the attachment of measurement instruments or other peripherals such as printers. These ports can be totally sealed when not in use.

The 3,5” VGA LCD touch screen with transflective technology makes the PDA suitable for harsh outdoor environments such as mining, construction, military and aerospace applications. The unit has five way controller and four function keys for easy finger application selection and control. The operating system is Windows CE or Windows Mobile. The battery life of eight hours means availability throughout a normal shift. The battery is field replaceable.
