GPRS modem with USB port

6 July 2011 Telecoms, Datacoms, Wireless, IoT

The SIM900USB from SIMCom is a GSM/GPRS modem with a USB interface to connect directly to a PC. The USB port carries data communication as well as supply of power. As a further enhancement over its predecessor, the SIM340USB, the product features an audio jack as well.

The modem fits one standard SIM card to gain access to the mobile network and is based on the popular SIM900 engine. As such, the SIM900USB has extensive functionality built into the firmware. In addition, it is faster and much less power hungry than the SIM340x range which preceded it. The current firmware within the SIM900USB modem can also facilitate SMS and TCP connections familiar to users of the SIM340USB, but one can now also make standard phone calls thanks to the inclusion of the audio and microphone interface. The firmware also supports the POST and GET of information in HTTP to a webpage, and also supports FTP for building files onto a FTP server.

Making use of the FTP functionality helps improve the total system speed and therefore performance when dealing with big amounts of data to transfer. A file can also be read from the FTP server with the SIM900USB. A typical example is where a ‘new settings.txt’ file is downloaded with the SIM900USB modem from an FTP server. The contents of this file are used to update a product/system in the field as required from time to time.
