PTC thermistors for overheating detection

Murata announced the availability of the PRF15 series of miniature positive temperature coefficient (PTC) thermistors designed specifically for overheating detection applications in a broad range of consumer electronics devices.

Believed to have the industry’s tightest temperature tolerance of ±3°C, the series lineup comprises devices with detection temperatures in the range of +80°C to +150°C in 10°C steps. Across the series the thermistor resistance at +25°C is 1 kΩ, with preferred detection points occurring at 10 kΩ and 100 kΩ values. For example, the PRF15AR102RB6RC part detects +135°C at 10 kΩ and +150°C at 100 kΩ. Maximum voltage is 32 V d.c.

Available in a compact 0402 package measuring only 1,0 x 0,5 mm, this surface mount device meets the increasing need for consumer end-products to incorporate a means of detecting overheating within space constrained applications. These can include notebook and tablet computers, cellular phones and LED lighting modules. Protection circuits within lithium-ion battery packs and motor coils are other possible applications.
