Secure data access module - smartcard kit

1 August 2001 Telecoms, Datacoms, Wireless, IoT

The secure data access module (SDMo) is a PC-card with an associated smartcard reader. The card is in Type II form factor and remains flush with the external housing. Manufactured by Molex, this product can be used as a passive adapter to enable a PCMCIA slot to read a smartcard. For high end applications the unit will carry thin electronic components such as an ASIC or crypto processor on a low profile PCB. This is needed for pay-TV applications to decode MPEG2 data streams in set-top boxes which are compliant to DVB-common interface.

Another new application is secure transactions via the Internet which can be accessed through a notebook, laptop or a set-top box. The card handles the encryption/decoding and also digital signature duties.

The Molex card kit includes a lower and upper cover comprising of metal and plastic components which can be shipped to the end customer for final assembly. The kit has a unique assembly feature which gives the end customer a simple and cost-effective final assembly method. Molex offers not only SDMo in a kit format, but can also deliver the full assembled unit which includes a loaded PCB conforming to the customer's bill of material.
