Fast Ethernet transceiver offers longer-distance performance

1 August 2001 Telecoms, Datacoms, Wireless, IoT

A Fast Ethernet chip from Cirrus Logic offers equipment manufacturers high signal integrity over cable lengths as long as 160 m, well above the industry standard of 100 m, according to the company. As OEMs increasingly migrate to machines that communicate with other machines, such as in factories or central offices, EMI causes noise levels to increase and operating conditions to become more stringent. The crystal CS8952T combines a mix of analog and digital processing onto a single chip to deliver high performance in critical areas of noise immunity, near end crosstalk (NEXT) margin, transmitter jitter, and power and receiver performance.

In settings where hundreds of components are used in a single application, signal integrity is tantamount to performance, says Cirrus. The CS8952T addresses the issue of signal integrity with multiple features. It utilises an adaptive equaliser that provides an optimal combination of line equalisation, noise immunity, and NEXT rejection to maintain signal quality even over poor quality or otherwise damaged cabling. The transmit drivers were specifically designed to produce a very low level of common mode noise, the source of EMI in network equipment utilising twisted pair media. The CS8952T also utilises an ultra-low jitter transmitter to extend error-free operation within the network, improving overall system performance by reducing receiver errors at the far end of the twisted pair cable.
