Constant-current latched LED driver IC

26 September 2001 Opto-Electronics

The A6277 from Allegro MicroSystems is an 8 bit, serial-input, constant-current latched driver integrated circuit specifically designed for LED display applications. The device incorporates an 8 bit CMOS shift register and its accompanying data latches, plus eight n-p-n constant-current sink drivers, each producing up to 150 mA output. Output voltage range is -0,5 V to +24 V.

The CMOS shift registers and latches allow for direct interfacing with microprocessor-based systems. With a 5 V logic supply, typical serial data input rates are up to 20 MHz. The LED drive current is determined by a single user-selected external resistor.

A CMOS serial data output permits cascaded connections in applications requiring additional drive lines. For inter-digit blanking, all outputs can be disabled with the output-enable input high. A 'high/low' function allows full selected current to be produced with the application of a logic 'low' or 50% selected current with the application of a logic 'high'.

The device is available in through-hole DIP or surface-mount SOIC package styles, and for operating temperature ranges of -20 to +85°C or -40 to +85°C. Under normal conditions, a copper lead frame and low logic power dissipation allow the dual-inline package to sink up to 150 mA (with 1,0 V voltage drop) through all outputs simultaneously at 100% duty cycle and 75°C.
