High speed amp exhibits ultra-low noise and distortion for 16 bit systems

26 September 2001 Analogue, Mixed Signal, LSI

Analog Devices has expanded its high-speed amplifier portfolio with the AD8021. Utilising its second-generation XFCB (eXtra fast complementary bipolar) process, the AD8021 features wide bandwidth (200 MHz at G = -1 and 190 MHz at G = -10), low-noise (2,1 nV/sqrt.Hz and 2,1 pA/sqrt.Hz) and superior 16 bit distortion performance (93 dBc SFDR at 1 MHz and better than 100 dBc at 100 kHz).

The amplifier device is based on an easy-to-use voltage feedback architecture with the flexibility of allowing the design engineer to choose the gain bandwidth product that best suits the application. An external compensation pin allows the frequency response to be tailored for a variety of applications, enabling essentially the same bandwidth for gains from 1 to 10.

The AD8021 has a wide voltage supply range between ±2,5 and ±12 V, settles 2 V input steps to within 1% in just 23 ns and features a 50 ns overload recovery time. This performance is achieved with only 7,7 mA max supply current for ±5 V supplies. Supply current can be reduced to 1,3 mA with an output disable feature. The device is 'well-behaved' and demonstrates stability over temperature - input offset voltage and input bias current drifts are 0,5 µV/°C and 10 nA/°C, respectively.

The new device can be used as a buffer for today's highest performance instrumentation grade 16 and 18 bit ADCs. As a general purpose IC, it is well suited for high-speed, high-gain applications. As such, applications for the AD8021 include ultra-sound signal processing, precision instrumentation and pre-amp designs, active filtering, line receivers, and other high gain circuitry on high-density PCB assemblies.

The AD8021 is packaged in low-profile 8-pin SOIC and micro-SOIC packages, specified over -40 to +85°C.
