Innovative analog technology provides programmable solution for position transducers

An application note detailing how field-programmable analog arrays (FPAAs) may be applied to simplify the use of linear variable displacement transducers (LVDTs) - a common component of automation and machinery - has been published by Anadigm.
According to the company, the IC technology provides all the circuitry required for stimulating the transducer and signal-conditioning its output for use by a typical embedded system, in a single chip - replacing 'fixed forever' discrete component designs. The circuits are created in software, using the FPAA's library of functions such as oscillators, gain stages and filters which are placed, interconnected and downloaded onto the chip. The note details how FPAAs may be used to implement different LVDT interfaces - allowing one basic design to be adapted for different machines during PCB production, or even reconfigured dynamically in the field under the control of the embedded system to adapt to different working conditions.
