Tool offers RTOS runtime analysis

In support of Segger’s embOS priority-controlled, real-time operating system (RTOS), the company’s partner, Percepio, has developed a tool that offers detailed and comprehensive insight into the runtime world for embedded software developers using embOS and Segger’s debug probe J-Link.
Called embOS-Trace, the tool improves the understanding of the behaviour of software and the changes made to it during the development process. It visualises the runtime behaviour of embedded software through more than 20 graphical views of runtime events, such as scheduling, interrupt handlers, kernel calls and application events. With views that are interconnected and intuitive to use, it thereby complements the code-level debugger perspective with the overall picture.
The tool uses software-defined trace, where events are stored in a RAM buffer. This modus is very flexible, easy-to-use, and does not depend on hardware trace support. The events are written to a target-side RAM buffer (typically 512 to 1024 Bytes) and then extracted by J-Link via live memory reads, without interfering with the executing system. The trace length is not limited by available RAM, with continuous trace streaming possible over an unlimited duration using a standard J-Link debug probe and a small RAM buffer.
