New GPS receiver macro-component

7 November 2001 Telecoms, Datacoms, Wireless, IoT

µ-blox has introduced its first miniature GPS receiver module. The company's TIM macro-component is a GPS receiver that can be processed like a single chip component. The TIM module is an ultra-thin and small package that in combination with minimal power consumption, excellent GPS performance and low cost makes it a desirable receiver for mobile GPS applications. In automotive applications TIM supports advanced tracking capabilities through fast recovery times combined with reliable operation in 'urban canyon' and areas of dense foliage.

TIM, a self-contained receiver for the global positioning system, provides complete GPS signal processing from antenna input to serial data output (NMEA or SiRF proprietary data format). A second serial port accepts differential GPS data (RTCM). The height of 3 mm at the size of 25,4 x 25,4 mm makes it the ideal GPS solution for applications with stringent space requirements. Its unique thin and compact package also makes expensive RF cabling obsolete. TIM is SMT solderable and can be handled by standard pick-and-place equipment. Operating at a nominal 3,3 V, the module consumes less than 0,5 W in continuous operation. TricklePower Mode further allows considerable reduction of power consumption.

Based on the SiRFstarII chip-set TIM supports all features of this architecture. Featuring the GRF2 RF front-end chip and an integrated LNA it connects seamlessly to low-cost passive and active antennas. GPS antennas (active or passive) can be connected without expensive RF cabling when placed on the same board.

Local µ-blox distributor RF Design is hosting a seminar on GPS technology on 29 November. The talk will be given by speakers from µ-blox of Switzerland. To attend the seminar contact RF Design, (011) 805 4462.
