Intel low-power sub-compact board

13 February 2002 Computer/Embedded Technology

Since the introduction of the Gene-4310 single board computer, Aaeon says it has received positive customer feedback and an overwhelming number of purchase orders. As a result, its marketing strategy led to the development of the Gene-5310 - a single board computer similar to the Gene-4310 in functions, but that possesses more capabilities.

The new Gene-5310, as with its predecessor, features: identical form factor (102 x 127 mm), functions in a fanless environment, and operates with 5 V of power. AAEON has also developed a Gene-Series pocket chassis to support this line of SBCs (power unit included).

The incorporated central processing unit is Intel's 'Tillamook' MMX BGA CPU. Running at 200/233/266 MHz, this fanless low power CPU has built in L2 Cache, offers 256 MB of memory, along with the front side bus running at 66 MHz. A further added function to the Gene-5310 is an additional LAN controller. The platform now consists of dual Intel 82559GD LAN controllers, capable of 10/100Base-T Fast Ethernet connection.

On-board memory consists of a single 144-pin SODIMM socket providing 128 MB of memory. Also, located on the solder side is a Type II Compact Flash socket offering up to 1 GB of memory. Gene-5310 utilises the Cbi7 2D/3D VGA chipset, with built-in display memory of 8 MB. TV output signals can also be achieved, through the TV Express MA830 digital TV encoder (supports Pal and NTSC).

The remaining features include audio chipset VT82C686B with integrated SoundBlaster and SoundBlaster Pro compatibility. Other capabilities are: the ability to use (2) IDE devices, (2) floppy disk drives, (1) parallel port, (2) USB ports, (1) IrDA port and (2) serial ports that can be configured as COM1, COM2, COM3 and COM4.
