Rugged CAN transceivers

Linear Technology's LT1796 is a rugged transceiver for Controller Area Network (CAN) bus applications. The LT1796 withstands ±15 kV ESD strikes and faults up to ±60 V. It is thus suitable for harsh environments such as industrial controls with 24 V supplies or automotive applications. In these applications, the loss of ground connection or cross-wiring faults can force DC voltages in excess of 24 V in either polarity onto the bus pins. This device survives these faults without the need for external protection circuitry. In standby, the supply current is reduced to 800 µA. A slew rate control allows a maximum data rate of 500 Kbps or can be programmed for slower rates to minimise EMI and reduce reflections due to long stubs or improper termination.
