RF Micro Devices' highly integrated 'Polaris Total Radio' transceiver solution uses Very Low Intermediate Frequency (VLIF) Architecture to replaces multiple components. The Polaris transceiver is a triple-band radio for GSM and GPRS applications with EDGE receive capabilities. It performs all major functions of the RF section, including both transmit and receive, and exceeds all ETSI specification requirements. All VCOs, associated loop filters and many of the power supply bypass capacitors are integrated on silicon, reducing the complete radio component count to fewer than 20. The Polaris includes the first commercially available fractional-N-based digital modulator, eliminating the I/Q modulator, phase detector, mixer and loop filters. The transceiver chip set solution consists of the RF2708, RF6001, and RF3133.
