Until recently, one of Taiwan's largest manufacturers of DRAM used desktop and notebook computers to control the production and process transaction systems in its wafer manufacturing clean room. With space in clean rooms being limited, a more efficient solution had to be found instead of desktop and notebook computers.
The company now uses Advantech's PPC-102T, a panel PC with TFT SVGA and LCD display. It serves as the process transaction system for wafer manufacturing, instruction retrieval system from test machines and as a process parameter in the clean room system. It also functions as the HMI during the wafer production process.
Using a bar code reader, the operator records each transaction then the system automatically gives instructions for the next production process. Through the PPC-102T's touchscreen the operator can consult instructions for operating the test machines properly and to ensure that production is proceeding normally.
Up to 70% smaller than desktop computers, the PPC-102T can be installed with a wide range of mounting options. It has an average lifetime of 25 000 hours compared to notebook computers with an average of 10 000 hours.
