550 MHz Pentium lll single-slot VME CPU board

16 Feb 2000 Computer/Embedded Technology

Concurrent Technologies has announced the release of what is believed to be the first single slot 6U CompactPCI board featuring the flip-chip Pentium III processor. The PP EMB/P3x is a peripheral slot controller CPU board, compliant with PCIMG 2.1 hot swap specification.

The PP EMB/P3x is a superior performance, high functionality CPU board, supporting the new low-power flip-chip Pentium III processor which is based on Intel's 0,18 µm Coppermine technology and 100 MHz system bus. The Pentium III has its own integrated Level 2 cache that operates at full CPU speed unlike older Pentium IIIs which worked at half speed and had the cache external to the CPU core. In addition, the new Level 2 cache has been further improved due to Intel's implementation of its advanced transfer cache which provides a 256-bit data path, 8-way associativity and a reduced latency - all of these features further improve the Pentium III's performance and consequently the board's performance is also improved.

To meet the major design objective of product reliability and maintainability within a single-slot, no CPU fan is needed; instead a passive heatsink is utilised.

The combination of the Pentium III CPU and the Intel 82440BX chipset in conjunction with the Intel 21554 embedded PCI bridge allows the on-board Pentium III CPU to operate independently of the Compact-PCI bus.

Additional features of the PP EMB/P3x include up to 256 Mbyte of fast DRAM, EIDE and Ethernet (10 or 100 Mbps) and battery-backed SRAM. PC-compatible features such as keyboard, mouse, realtime clock, USB, floppy disk and printer ports are also provided on the board. In addition, the functionality can be further increased by the addition of up to two PMC modules. A transition module is also available to provide connectivity for rear panel I/O.

To ensure easy integration, the board supports many of today's industry standard operating systems including Windows NT, VxWorks, Solaris, Linux and QNX.

With its variety of interfaces, choice of memory sizes and support for PMC modules, the board is highly suitable for a variety of applications including telecommunications, industrial control, radar and medical. The PP EMB/P3x is an ideal partner to the PP PSE/P2x system slot controller board released earlier this year.
