Analog Devices has announced an integrated synthesiser that it claims is the first solution to feature a 1 GSa/s direct digital synthesiser (DDS), 10-bit D/A converter and fast frequency hopping and fine-tuning resolution functionalities on a single chip. The AD9858 performs at more than triple the speed of previous solutions, without increasing power dissipation, says the manufacturer. This makes it well-suited to wireless infrastructure as well as military and aerospace radar applications.
On-chip functional blocks include a DDS core, a digital to analog converter (DAC), 2 GHz RF mixer, a 150 MHz phase detector and a programmable charge pump with proprietary fast-locking acquisition logic. The integration of these multiple functional blocks and their respective levels of performance enable the AD9858 to achieve high synthesiser performance at low levels of cost, power dissipation and implementation complexity.
The AD9858 DDS also has a 32-bit phase accumulator, 14-bit phase offset adjustment, an analog mixer capable of operating at 2 GHz, a phase-frequency detector (PFD), and a programmable charge pump with advanced fast-lock capability. These RF building blocks can be used for various frequency synthesis loops or as needed in system design.
The new DDS can directly generate frequencies up to 400+ MHz when driven at 1 GHz internal clock speed. The AD9858 is easily configured by writing data to its on-chip digital registers that control all operations of the device. In addition, it can be programmed to operate in single-tone mode or in a frequency-sweeping mode.
