Laser diodes for free space data transmission

To complement its existing range of high performance LEDs, Hamamatsu Photonics is now manufacturing a range of high power, CW and pulsed laser diodes.

Peak wavelengths are in the range from 680 nm to 980 nm and these products can now be offered with output powers up to 2 W (CW) or 45 W (pulsed) from a single facet (chip). These products are ideally suited to data communication applications through free space, and customers have demonstrated in their systems, transmissions possible up to 6 km when used in conjunction with its APD receivers.

Optical free space data transmission is not affected by the RF bottlenecks and interference around major towns, it can normally be operated without license, and in general, is cheaper than alternative microwave technologies.
