388-470 MHz patch antennas

20 November 2002 Telecoms, Datacoms, Wireless, IoT

Poynting Antennas recently added a low profile patch antenna to its range of specialised antennas. This antenna covers the 388-470 MHz band and can be used in many applications, for example: UHF-licensed voice and data communications; trunking including TETRA bands; active RFID systems; license-free 403 MHz and 433 MHz bands; 433 MHz radio amateur band.

The antenna has a gain of 7-9,5 dBi with a VSWR of less than 1,5 over the band. The 400 x 400 mm antenna is linearly polarised and is supplied with a N-Type female connector as standard, but other options are available.

The antenna has been tested in a tunnel in Switzerland for vehicle active RFID systems by Michael Bruno of Becker Electronics, who commented, "with a normal stubby we get a 30 m read range and with the patch antenna we could not get far away enough to lose the signal."

The antenna has also found successful underground application in an RFID system implemented by Ken Morrell of Mine Radio Systems. Here the antenna directivity and the 13 dB F/B ratio is used to detect the direction of movement of people along a tunnel.

Brian Fowler of Rotrax has also tested the antenna for its telemetry units and has indicated strong interest in the product for use with the units. Many of them operate in the licence-free 403 and 433 MHz bands.

The antenna is unique in that Poynting is not aware of any other commercial patch antennas in this frequency band. The patch is waterproof and is supplied with mounting hardware for pole and wall mounting.
