Design tools for forward power converters

Power Integrations has released a comprehensive reference design kit containing all the engineering tools needed to design energy efficient multiple output forward converters up to 200 W output power for applications such as PC and server main power supplies. The Design Accelerator Kit (DAK-12) simplifies the design of complex forward converter power supplies using the company's highly integrated TOPSwitch-GX high voltage power conversion ICs.
The application support tools included with DAK-12 enable designers to realise the benefits of an integrated power conversion IC solution. These include lower component count, reduced system cost, and greater ease-of-design for faster time-to-market. A TOPSwitch-GX integrated solution will require up to 40 fewer components compared to a standard forward converter design, using a discrete MOSFET and separate PWM controller.
The DAK-12 features a working ATX form-factor, forward topology design PC power supply using the TOPSwitch-GX to deliver 145 W continuous (160 W peak) with multiple outputs. It also includes a standby power supply using the TinySwitch-II low power switcher IC family.
EcoSmart energy efficiency technology is built into both device families. The kit also includes a detailed 40-page design methodology application note, a complete engineering report showing all the design details and performance data, data sheets and several device samples.
