PC/104plus embedded computer with firewire

12 March 2003 Computer/Embedded Technology

Digital-Logic has added a product to its high-performance single board computers in PC/104plus format. The new embedded PC, the Microspace MSMG1SEV, is based on a passive-cooled 300 MHz Geode GX1 processor from National Semiconductor. The highly integrated chip includes a x86 processor core, a display controller with 2D graphics accelerator, a main memory and a PCI bus host controller.

The Microspace MSMG1SEV provides all common standard PC interfaces including AC97 compatible audio functions, a 100/10Base-T LAN interface (82551ER), and two Firewire ports (IEEE1394). In addition, main memory is expandable from 16 to 256 MB and it has powerful graphics equipment. The embedded computer is equipped with a SMI721 graphics controller with 4 MB video RAM. The controller offers resolutions of up to 1280 x 1024 pixels with 256 colours and enables the connection of a 36 bit LCD, VGA monitor, and TV in/output (NTSC/PAL). The video controller supports dual screen and split screen mode if two monitors are connected.

Because of the fast Firewire interfaces and the powerful graphics controller, the MSMG1SEV is an ideal solution for DVD applications in the automotive area, POI (points of interest) applications, and for passenger entertainment in aeroplanes and trains.

Further technical features are a watchdog, advanced APM and ACPI power-management functions, the operation of an external or integrated RTC battery, and EEPROM support up to 1 k. In addition, the PC/104plus board includes a CompactFlash socket for the optional assembling of solid-state memories, two USB (universal serial bus) interfaces and RS232 and RS485 ports at COM1 and COM2. Optionally the board can be equipped with a video input.

The MSMG1SEV requires a 5 V power supply (consumes between 500 mA and 1800 mA) and does not require active cooling. It runs under Windows 98/2000/XP/CE/NT and other common operating systems, such as Linux, QNX and RTXDOS. It is rated for -25 to +70°C, optionally -40 to +85°C.
