Boost converter for white LED market

26 March 2003 Power Electronics / Power Management

Intersil's first device in a new family of products for white light emitting diode (LED) displays is a high frequency pulse width modulation (PWM) step-up regulator capable of driving up to 12 LEDs while ensuring uniform brightness in white LED backlighting applications. Intersil's new EL7513 provides the precision, accuracy and efficiency required in cellphones, personal digital assistants (PDAs), digital cameras and other battery-powered electronics.

"New generations of portable products use colour displays that depend on white LED backlighting to ensure brilliance and colour accuracy. Our EL7513 white LED regulator is tailored to the demanding performance and low power requirements of these products," said Michael Jennings, director of strategic marketing for Intersil's Elantec video and flat panel products. "This new PWM step-up converter is specially designed to boost maximum output voltage in order to drive four LEDs in series or 12 LEDs in a series/parallel configuration, ensuring uniform brightness across white LED backlit screens.

With the ability to boost up to 18 V, the EL7513 features soft-start and dimming control, offers ±4% LED diode current accuracy and can achieve up to 89% efficiency when driving a 30 mA load. The device operates from 2,6 to 5,5 V and features a standby mode of just 1 mA maximum.
