International fixed-pricing SIM card solution

25 August 2021 Telecoms, Datacoms, Wireless, IoT

OEM IoT device vendors face increasingly complex cellular connectivity issues over time. Manufacturing is often outsourced to third-party contractors and finished devices are being distributed to many locations throughout the world. Global connectivity has become both challenging and the expected norm. Once connected, issues such as weak signal coverage, SIM-to-hardware compatibility and prolonged technical support are often experienced. Cellular connectivity has become more complicated due to there being a large variety of applications and wireless networks.

Otto Wireless Solutions has been appointed as a SoftSIM distributor by Linksfield. SoftSIM is available in two offerings: plastic and embedded.

Essentially a SoftSIM is a SIM offering which caters for cross-border connectivity at a set, attractive rate. Plastic SoftSIM is the conventional SIM card which is also used in cellular phones, while embedded SoftSIM is a virtual SIM which is embedded at the firmware level and presents another level of security.

The modules which are currently supported by Linksfield for embedded SoftSIM are SIMCom, Quectel and MobileTek. The integration of an embedded SoftSIM is not limited to the module level only; it can be offered at the chipset level in the form of Qualcomm and MTK solutions. Linksfield also offers the option to roam into Africa or Europe which is more popular in the tracking industry.

With SoftSIM in the application, subscribers can:

• Monitor the status of all acquired SIM cards.

• Control data SIM subscriptions.

• Manage SIMs by deactivating SIM cards not in use.

• Protect data from unauthorised users.

The SoftSIM solution is currently available on MTN and Vodacom networks in South Africa, however Linksfield is working hard to include other mobile network operators. The offering is for data and SMS only and is not intended for voice applications.
