Solving South African power problems with locally built intelligence

South Africa has a power problem. Not just power outages, though that is obviously part of it. The deeper problem is that most large sites like residential estates, commercial properties, healthcare facilities, and hospitality groups, have very little real visibility into what is happening with the electricity they consume. They pay the bill, but they do not always know why.


Smart metering infrastructure in South Africa remains patchy. The rollout has been slow, coverage is inconsistent, and for most multi-unit residential and commercial developments, granular per-unit measurement simply does not exist. Facilities managers are flying partially blind, making decisions about load, cost, and compliance without the data to back them up.

This is the problem Dark Line Technology Solutions was built to address.

Dark Line is a South African manufacturer, based in Centurion, designing and producing connected infrastructure management hardware locally. That matters for a few reasons. Lead times are shorter. Support is on the ground. Critically, the products are designed around the specific constraints of the South African grid, not adapted from European or American specs and retrofitted to our context.

The company’s hardware range is NRCS and IEC certified. The devices are DIN rail mountable, designed to sit inside existing electrical infrastructure without requiring a site rebuild. Installation is practical, so the hardware earns its place.

Measurement, control, and visibility at scale

The Gecko Switch is Dark Line’s load management device. It measures temperature and energy usage across multiple appliances and locations be that geysers, air conditioning units, or lighting loads, and gives operators the ability to power on, power off, set schedules, limit load, and receive automated reporting. All of this is managed through the Gecko Hub, Dark Line’s centralised SaaS platform.

For sites without smart metering infrastructure, this combination does considerably more than a traditional meter would. It does not just record consumption. It allows active management of that consumption, in real time, remotely, across an entire estate from a single dashboard. The data feeds directly into reporting that operators can use internally and present upward.


What this looks like in practice

Tri-Star Construction’s Fleurhof development is a useful reference point. The challenge was straightforward to state, but harder to solve: reduce electricity costs for residents, while maintaining reliable hot water access, including during load shedding.

Dark Line deployed 260 Geyser Gecko units across the site, with 600 more in the pipeline. The Geyser Gecko is Dark Line’s solar geyser controller, SANS XA10400 compliant, which manages switching between solar and grid intelligently based on availability, cost, and user-defined schedules. The units are managed centrally through the Gecko Hub.

The site is projecting up to R1,08 million in annual grid savings. More importantly, the facilities team has full visibility across every unit on site, from day one. No manual checks. No guesswork. The data is there.

For context on per-unit performance, a Johannesburg customer using the same system achieved 89% solar utilisation in February 2026, saving R1486,78 in a single month on one geyser alone.

The platform is the product

Dark Line’s positioning is deliberate. The hardware is the entry point. The Gecko Hub is the product. It is the layer that aggregates data from every connected device on a site, makes it legible, and enables operators to act on it. As Dark Line expands its device range, the platform expands with it, covering more appliances, more load types, more infrastructure categories.
