More efficient production with optimised procurement

Every BOM has a hierarchy, whether anyone admits it or not. The microcontroller gets sourced first. The power module gets tracked closely. The connector, the resistor bank, the switch, the relay – those get ordered last because they are cheap, they are simple, and they have never been a problem.Until they are.
Interconnect, passive and electromechanical components carry a risk that does not show up on a price list. They are produced across thousands of SKUs by hundreds of niche manufacturers, many of whom will discontinue a line with little warning because, from their side, it is a small part too. Minimum order quantities on these components can be brutal relative to what a production run actually needs, and because nobody’s tracking the lifecycle of a switch the way they track a chipset, the first sign of trouble is often the moment it is needed on the floor and is not there.
This pattern shows up across the industry, not just in isolated cases. A BOM with 40 lines closes on the big components early, then stalls for weeks on a connector that seemed too minor to worry about. The production delay does not care that the part was cheap. The line stops the same way either way.
What is changing is how procurement teams are approaching that risk. The old assumption that component risk scales with component cost no longer holds. A R2000 module with a known lifecycle and a tracked supplier is often safer than a R2 connector from a manufacturer nobody has checked in on for two years. The shortages of the past few years have made that visible in a way it never used to be. Lifecycle tracking, alternate sourcing, and MOQ planning, once reserved for expensive parts, are increasingly applied line-by-line, regardless of unit price.
That shift matters more than it sounds. It is not glamorous work, and nobody writes case studies about a well-sourced relay, but it is where a lot of the industry’s real resilience is quietly being built right now, one overlooked line item at a time.
