Responding to growing demand for an intelligent, self-governing, dual SIM modem, Otto Wireless Solutions announced that it has developed and will be releasing the Meerkat 2G modem during the first quarter of 2014. Prototypes have already been deployed to beta customers, and have reportedly met with positive response from the market.
Aside from being able to open, monitor and maintain a TCP connection on startup, the device features two SIM card interfaces and seamlessly switches between them in the case of poor GSM signal. A simple graphic interface gives the user the ability to reconfigure the modem, or create a configuration file which can then be stored for later use.
Internally, the Meerkat houses a Micro SD card which is accessible as a standard USB storage medium. At the heart of the modem is a powerful ARM core, and the firmware of this core can be changed by simply placing a new firmware file onto the Micro SD card and cycling power to the modem; the bootloader will do the rest.
External interfacing to the modem is accomplished via either a serial or USB port, and a wide input DC voltage range of 6 V to 60 V is accommodated. Eight I/O interfaces are available for developers who have the appropriate software suite, which will allow them to customise the ARM core to their own requirements.
