Embedded antennas designed locally

Poynting Innovations has been contracted by several companies to design embedded and OEM antennas for cellular and wireless LAN devices.

Embedded and OEM (original equipment manufacturer) antennas for cellular, wireless LAN, GPS and Bluetooth devices are becoming more attractive and imperative. Consumer devices incorporating GSM/WLAN and other radio modules are often more attractive, reliable and convenient if the antenna is located inside the enclosure rather than on the outside.

This trend is clearly evident in normal cellphones. Many special applications like vehicle tracking, on the other hand, require custom antennas attached to the end of a cable, which are suitable for 'hiding' or embedding into vehicle upholstery and the like.

The challenges in designing such antennas are:

* To reduce the size of the antenna.

* Ensure multiband operation.

* Customising the antenna to work inside a specific enclosure/environment.

Poynting Innovations has developed design software, methodologies and experience in the development and industrialisation of such antennas. Figure 1 shows the antenna and enclosure as simulated in Poynting Innovations' Electromagnetic Simulation software.

Some examples of embedded and OEM antennas that the company has designed include:

* An embedded antenna for a smart phone manufacturer. The dimensions of this 900/1800 MHz dual band antenna is 32 x 40 mm and it covers both cellphone bands.

* A dual band GSM and (separate) WLAN antenna integrated into a handheld reader device.

* An 'end of coax' dual band antenna developed for incorporation into a GSM-based vehicle tracking system.

* An integrated antenna for a cellphone least cost router/modem system.

* Antennas integrated into phone booths and phone shops.

Poynting Innovations supplies industry with electromagnetic engineering research and development services and products.
