Turnkey contract manufacturer focuses on partnership

30 July 2003 Manufacturing / Production Technology, Hardware & Services

Omnigo, the South African electronics manufacturing services company, offers customers a complete turnkey solution, an approach that enables a customer to transfer over virtually all internal manufacturing requirements and responsibilities. This approach, it says, coupled with advanced manufacturing technologies, allows customers to improve cost, manufacturing performance and time-to-volume production.

Services include: circuit and production design; component selection; sourcing and procurement of materials; automated assembly; industrialisation and implementation of product and system acceptance tests; as well as shipment to end-user points of distribution. The company says it performs the production design process in tandem with the resolution of manufacturing issues, which enhances the manufacturability of products and increases the production benefits achieved.

Business strategy

Omnigo believes that for contract manufacturers, the highest level of efficiency and effectiveness is achieved when organisational structure, business systems and operational models are customised to meet the specific needs of individual lines of business. Thus, engineers, project managers and supervisors, materials procurement, line workers and dedicated manufacturing equipment are integrated to produce a single family of products within the company. This focus, it says, has enabled it to achieve extraordinary levels of success, while operating in an environment that has fostered innovation and employee empowerment.

Today, this model has matured to become the organisational vehicle for the manufacture and assembly of products and complete systems. Flexible manufacturing systems enable the use of high-volume, continuous-flow processes to produce a high diversity of products to the varied requirements of customers.

Client approach

Omnigo has customers that are among some of South Africa's largest electronics companies. As its manufacturing partner, they are able to enjoy economies of scale and access to some of the best expertise and technology available, without having the burden of infrastructure capital outlay. Omnigo invests in formulating the technology, purchasing the materials and equipment and developing the expertise required to manufacture the products.

Industrialisation determines a product's success. At Omnigo, product industrialisation and manufacturing work hand-in-hand. The team that industrialises the product also assists in its manufacturing. Many clients take advantage of this industrialisation strength, says the company. Working closely with the customer's engineers, it industrialises products for cost-effective, high-volume manufacturing. While always striving for 'zero defect', Omnigo develops the test processes and reliability plans, and uses the latest computer-aided design and engineering tools. It says that developing these processes at the same time reduces cost and improves time-to-volume production.

System integration

All aspects of Omnigo's manufacturing activities are supported by computerised control and monitoring systems. Production centres have advanced CAD systems, and these support automated test procedures/processes. Materials planning, purchasing, stock and shop floor control systems are computerised, and materials inspection and vendor qualities are monitored continuously.

Omnigo says that its greatest asset lies within its employees. The company's commitment to personal growth through training has cultivated responsible employees who are fully committed to the quality and the products they produce. Located in Pretoria, Omnigo's facilities extend to over 6000 m2. A member of IPC, Omnigo builds to IPC610c class I, II and III standards and is Dekra ISO 9001-2000 certified.
