Vortex tube enclosure/cabinet coolers are economical and maintenance-free

19 November 2003 Manufacturing / Production Technology, Hardware & Services

A simple and economic system to cool sensitive instrumentation, electronics and communications equipment or components in enclosures and cabinets located in harsh, dirty and hot industrial or hazardous (Ex) locations is offered by Elen Enclosures.

Powered by compressed air, the Vortex tube cooler generates cold air without moving parts and refrigerants, resulting in exceptional reliability. Maintenance is minimal - if any. Made of stainless steel, the coolers are easy and quick to install. The system protects the components by cooling the internal air in the enclosure below the ambient temperature, removing humidity, inhibiting corrosion and maintaining positive air pressure to prevent the ingress of water, dust, oil mist and hot ambient air.

Model V20025 delivers approx. 800 W (2500 BTU/h) of cooling power. The cooling capacity is continuously adjustable by the 'hot end' valve. In applications requiring cooling power higher than 800 W the cooler can be installed in a 'battery' arrangement. The coolers are very compact having a diameter of only 51 x 215 mm long.

The way a Vortex tube work is by converting a stream of compressed air into two streams - one hot and one cold. A Vortex tube can produce cold air down to -35°C and hot air up to +127°C. Compressed air is injected tangentially into the tube's generator chamber at sonic speed and creates a cyclone (Vortex) spinning at about one million revolutions per minute. Part of the air is forced to spin inward to the centre hole and travels up the tube where a valve turns this spinning column (Vortex) of air inside itself. The inside column of air gives up its heat to the outside column. The cold air is then directed out the cold end of the Vortex tube. The temperature and air flow are totally controllable by adjusting the valve at the hot end of the tube.
