Compact fixed reader for UHF RFID transponders

16 June 2004 Telecoms, Datacoms, Wireless, IoT

Trolley Scan has repackaged its new super sensitive RFID reader in a new lightweight case that it says is ergonomically pleasing, suitable for mass manufacture, and yet maintains its high standard of performance and electromagnetic compatibility with other users in the RF spectrum.

Housed in a moulded ABS plastic case, it weighs 3,5 kg, operates on mains power, and offers read ranges up to 11 m. It operates on the UHF frequencies of 860 to 930 MHz using 10 kHz bandwidth, uses a bistatic antenna system and can read up to 500 transponders in a field at a time, according to the company.

Trolley Scan says that with the widespread acceptance of RFID, what will become important in the future is the ability of many readers to work in close proximity. As this system operates on only 10 kHz bandwidth with a 'tag-talks-first' protocol, it is able to have systems operating in very close proximity - something not possible with the currently proposed EPC and ISO18000-6 systems.
