Linear battery charger chip integrates pass transistor and protection

20 October 2004 Power Electronics / Power Management

Microchip is offering to market single-cell and dual cell versions of a fully-integrated, charge-management controller that features a charge-safety timer and temperature monitor. The MCP7386X devices monitor charge and temperature status, giving the user full control and sophisticated protection, says the company.

The devices have an overall accuracy of ±0,5%, maximise system runtime between charges and ensure that battery-cell capacity is fully utilised without cycle-life degradation. Onboard safety timers and a thermal monitor provide time- and temperature-based charge termination, protecting applications from defective batteries and increasing the battery safety. The devices also feature reverse-blocking protection.

The MCP7386X family features a built-in pass transistor, which minimises the number of external components and the overall footprint. In addition, the controllers extend battery life with a reverse leakage current of less than 0,4 μA (typical) and supply a programmable fast-charge current up to 1,2 A.

The MCP73861 device is specified from 4,5 V to 12 V; the MCP73862 device from 8,7 V to 12 V and both operate over a -40 to +85°C temperature range. They are available in 4,1/4,2 V and 8,2/8,4 V to support one- or two-cell Li-Ion/Li-Polymer batteries (with coke or graphite anodes). The devices come in Pb-free 4 x 4 mm QFN package.
