Web-based communication controllers for cost-sensitive applications

25 July 2007 Computer/Embedded Technology

The ADAM-6500 and ADAM-6501 are powerful Ethernet-enabled controllers from Advantech for industrial automation and control. They provide an ideal environment to develop applications converting RS232/485 devices and/or equipment data to the Ethernet/Internet world with minimum effort. ADAM-6500 is a web-enabled communication controller with Intel StrongARM, while ADAM-6501 is a web-enabled universal communication controller with Intel Xscale.

Both controllers have built-in Windows CE.NET to run embedded Ethernet applications, a built-in CompactFlash slot, and a built-in Flash disk for Win CE and user applications. Their built-in Windows CE.NET operating system allows users to run new programs produced in Microsoft embedded VC++. The Windows environment also includes a web server to allow the designer to develop web-enabled applications.

Communication speed is up to 115,2 Kbps, and automatic data flow control in RS485 mode is possible. ADAM-6500 and ADAM-6501 may be DIN-rail or wall mounted, and a built-in realtime clock and watchdog timer are standard.
