The new GSM modems from Phoenix Contact make use of the worldwide GSM cellular network in conjunction with Internet technology to provide secure connections to remote industrial Ethernet networks.
In addition to on-demand GSM dial-up connections for classic remote servicing of machines and systems, this modem can also be used to establish affordable TCP/IP-based GPRS connections. Since GPRS and EDGE are billed by data volume and not connection time, this is particularly attractive in applications where data has to be captured continuously. EDGE represents the further development of GPRS and offers significantly faster data transmission rates up to 210 Kbps.
Regardless of an application’s location, quad-band technology makes it possible to access process data anywhere in the world via a secure VPN connection. A full-fledged router, the modem is able to establish a connection between two Ethernet networks using the cellular network. Here, password-protected dial-up, IPsec encryption, and an integrated firewall offer a high degree of data security. User-friendly web-based management makes it quick and easy to set up the modems. Six integrated switch inputs can be used to send alarm messages as SMS text messages or e-mails in remote monitoring applications. An additional four switch inputs can be activated remotely using password-protected SMS text messages.
