Industrial RS485/422 transceivers

17 March 2010 Telecoms, Datacoms, Wireless, IoT

The XR5486E and XR5488E from Exar are high performance RS485/422 transceivers that feature enhanced differential output voltage and fast data rates – up to 52 Mbps while operating from a single 5 V power supply – making them best suited for Profibus applications. They are therefore targeted at applications such as factory automation, industrial process control, high-speed motor control/position encode systems, fieldbus networks, Profibus DP and PA networks, security networks, building environmental control systems, and remote metering and monitoring.

The transceivers load the data bus only 1/8th as much as a standard RS485 unit does. This allows up to 256 devices to be connected simultaneously on a bus without violating required RS485 signal margin and without using repeaters. Hot swap capability prevents unwanted glitches during power-up sequencing or live insertion. The devices also feature advanced failsafe operation, 15 kV ESD protection, a shutdown mode drawing 1 μA, driver short-circuit protection and thermal overload protection.
