SIMCom recently released its latest low-cost GPRS offering, the SIM900BE, to mass production. The device adds an additional option to the SIM900 family, which has already achieved a degree of success with some notable design wins and approvals, such as recently being approved by AT&T in the United States.
With its onboard TCP/IP stack and low power consumption (owing to the ARM-9 core processor) included as part of the package, this quad-band GPRS module is well suited to battery powered and remote industrial applications. In terms of voice capability, the modem features a full Tricodec capable of full rate, half rate or enhanced full rate performance.
Now, designers preferring a pluggable GSM engine can opt for the compact SIM900BE, and thanks to the onboard SIM card holder, the engine is suitable for designs where space constraints are a concern. As antenna interface, the device accommodates either a U.FL connector, or the user can solder a pigtail directly to the module. The SIM900 family targets applications with custom GSM/GPRS requirements such as energy management, voice calls, GSM gateways and industrial PLCs.
